UNLV's Arboretum
Great Place: The grass is very inviting, and so are the shade trees on campus. I enjoy the sounds of nature while eating a snack, reading a book, or just listening to the birds sing.

Memorable Moment: I've seen hummingbirds circle our trees and flowers while sitting on the lawn — what a treat to watch them circle and play during a quiet moment on campus.

UNLV's Arboretum
...................................

  • In May 1985, the Nevada state Legislature established the entire UNLV campus as an arboretum — a place for studying and exhibiting growing trees.
  • Guided tours of the Arboretum can be arranged, and self-guided tour brochures are available in the lobby of the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History.
  • UNLV's champion trees (the largest specimen in the state of their species) include Weeping Mulberry, Strawberry, and Chir Pines.

Michelle Elekonich's honeybee lab (WHI 113)
Great Place: Working in the lab is very unique. Every time I'm here, I'm learning something new: how to care for the bees or new techniques.

Memorable Moment: Going into the apiary wearing only shorts, a shirt, and a veil. I'm surprised I didn't get stung at all! Honeybees really are gentle.

The Center for Energy Research
Great Place:
Todd: The research center has made many contributions to the pursuit of renewable energy production and energy conservation, a field that has many far-reaching effects.

Joseph: We have full-scale demo projects with industry partners that allow them to test their products, and we get to work on their technologies. The research we conduct is a good combo of understanding classroom material and also learning from direct experience. There is a lot of community interaction; for example, recently a well-known local car dealership called and asked for advice on "how to go green."

Mark: It's a great place to learn about how different systems actually work while they are operating in the field, rather than from a specification sheet.

Memorable Moment:
Todd: The students at the center are extremely motivated and very intelligent. It has been a humbling experience.

Joseph: We get to meet so many people, from British scientists and inventors to Senator Harry Reid and school children.

Mark: I recently gave a television interview about a research project I am working on and have been roasted by friends and family because of the sunglasses I happened to be wearing during my five or six seconds of air time.

  • One of the largest grants to UNLV was received by the CER from the U.S. Department of Energy for a project with subcontractors Pulte Homes and Nevada Power Company. The purpose of this work is to determine and demonstrate approaches to decrease substantially the peak electrical demand of a new housing development.
  • Most of the research work within the CER is accomplished by students — both graduate and undergraduate. Students are able to work with state-of-the-art concepts and systems.

English Language Center
Great Place: Everybody who comes into the ELC has something to say about it. Its very friendly. Its almost like walking into a living room.

Memorable Moment: The ELC became my family the moment I walked onto the campus. I had great instructors who always helped me out and gave me the opportunity to succeed — not only in school, but also outside of class. I tried to give up, but they were always giving me support and helping me out.

Nursing Skills Lab
Great Place: It provides a hands-on learning experience, and students develop advanced skills before entering hospitals.

Memorable Moment: The expressions on students' faces and the light of realization in their eyes each time we engage in simulation exercises is memorable. Its all about the student learning.

Environmental and Occupational Health Laboratory
Great Place: The lab is the centerpiece for our research. It provides opportunities for students to actively be involved in research that directly enhances the quality of life in Nevada.

Memorable Moment: Seeing this lab full of students and knowing the work they conducted in this facility was the basis for their theses and dissertations.

  • Unlike most labs, the EOH laboratory has the ability to analyze both organic and inorganic compounds.
  • The mission of the EOH laboratory is focused on human and wildlife health.
  • With the support of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, our research examines lead concentrations in imported candy wrappers, sticks, straws, and the candy itself. Other communities can use our newly developed scientific protocol for quick and cost-effective screening of candies and other sources of lead contamination in their own communities, helping protect children across the nation.

Department of Theatres Scene Shop
Great Place: The shop is a full-scale laboratory for students to develop their skills and apply classroom knowledge while working with a variety of local and national artists.

Memorable Moment: The Scene Shop is full of activity on a daily basis. Putting on 10 to 12 productions plus special events every year usually creates a unique set of challenges. Its always memorable when we are unsure if our plan will work, and then after research, analysis, and planning, we try it and it works. Last year, when we were preparing for Doubt, the automated stage we were working on finally came together less than two weeks before the performance. That was memorable.

The Biomechanics Laboratory
Great Place: Theres a wide variety of instruments to quantify human movement, including a 12-camera, 3D, motion-capture system; dual-force platforms;, and two eight-channel electromyography systems, equipment to test energy absorption of running shoes.

Memorable Moment: In 2002, we held a Biomechanics Invitational Seminar. Twenty researchers from around the country with similar research interests visited UNLV to present their current research.

  • Graduate students typically leave a state or country flag hanging from the lab ceiling, and there is a nice collection of state and international flags.
  • One wall of the lab is the back wall of the racquetball courts, which means that there is an occasional 'thumping sound' of a racquetball in the lab.
  • The Biomechanics Laboratory and the Athletic Training Research Laboratory exist in the same room within the Sports Injury Research Center.

Xeriscape Garden
Great Place: Its one of the places on campus you can truly be surrounded by nature without going to some remote corner of campus. Its a convenient escape, and its really nice to be able to take pictures, study, or just watch the chipmunks scurry around. Its one of those places that you can go when you are in a bad mood and come back feeling refreshed.

Memorable Moment: When I lived in the residence halls, it was nice to be able to go there in the early evening and study while listening to the gurgling fountain. As a professional staff member, it is a nice place to eat my lunch and catch up with colleagues.

Student Recreation and Wellness Center
Great Place: I love both working and working out here. The facility is so beautiful and state-of-the-art, and there is so much to do: take a group fitness class, play sports, take a swim, or relax in the massage chairs.

Memorable Moment: When five football players took the Cardio Cabaret class I teach. Sensual dance moves combined with rhythmic cardio exercise helps with flexibility and coordination, and it tones the body. That week, we were using chairs and boas as the props. It was nice to see our Rebel men enjoying what most think to be an all-womens class.

The Center for Individual, Couple, and Family Counseling (CICFC)
Great Place: Its a great place for learning and gaining experience. It also provides valuable services to UNLV students and the community for a reasonable fee.

Memorable Moment: My first counseling session. I was anxious and excited, anticipating putting into action everything Id learned. In the end, I was relieved, because I was on my way to doing exactly what I wanted to do, therapy.

Lied Library
Great Place: The very first time I walked into the library, I literally had to catch my breath.

Best Feature: Lied Library is full of resources. Everyone could benefit from the wide range of databases and books, no matter what their major is. And if youre having trouble, there are librarians for every subject area who really know their stuff.

Thomas & Mack Legal Clinic
Great Place: The clinic offers legal assistance to people who would otherwise not be able to afford an attorney.

Memorable Moment: Working as a child advocate for children in the foster care system was amazing. Knowing that these children are relying on you to be their voice in the legal process is a really important and daunting thing. The clinic was the only opportunity I had to gain real-world experience.
