UNLV Athletic Trainers
The staff of physicians, certified athletic trainers, graduate intern athletic trainers, along with athletic training students, provide medical coverage for the seventeen intercollegiate athletic programs at UNLV.
The athletic training education program includes classes and participation in clinical experience under the direction of a certified athletic trainer. There are currently 17 certified athletic trainers on the UNLV athletic training faculty and staff.
The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas has seven (7) graduate internship positions within the athletic training staff.
The Department of Kinesiology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas also has several graduate assistant positions for teaching and research positions with the athletic training faculty as well as off campus High School ATC positions. There are positions available each fall. If interested contact Tedd Girouard. Admissions criteria to be considered for UNLV Graduate College admission are listed on the Kinesiology web site http://kinesiology.unlv.edu
The Undergraduate Athletic Training Education Program at UNLV is a CAATE accredited athletic training curriculum program. Students completing the clinical athletic training education program will earn a bachelor of science with a major in athletic training. During the Athletic Training Education Program, the athletic training student will attain competencies through a specialized hands-on, practical experience.
The athletic training student gains clinical experience directly from team physicians and staff athletic trainers in the areas of prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation for athletic-related injuries. In addition to the athletic training room and field exposure, students may spend additional hours gaining clinical experience in sports medicine clinics, observing surgical procedures, and assisting physicians in an office setting. This hands-on, practical instruction not only compliments the educational experience, but also provides excellent field based learning opportunities for each student.
Scholarships and awards are also available to students who achieve academic excellence, satisfies the standards of the National Athletic Trainers' Association and demonstrates abilities necessary to be employed as a certified athletic trainer.
Each year, UNLV Athletic Training students compete against other Athletic Training Education Programs in the Far West Athletic Trainers' Association Quiz Bowl. In 2011, the team of Cody Bremner, Chistine Samson, and Shun Jinnouchi made school history by winning both the Far West and the National Quiz Bowl in New Orleans, LA.
